Nigerian Dwarf goats are known for the breed’s superior butterfat content. Nigerians also produce higher levels of protein in their milk than all other breeds. The milk does not have the stereotypical “goaty” flavor, but instead, is creamy and delicious! The website Backyard Goats shared some very informative facts about the benefits of goat's milk over cow's milk. Goat's milk is much easier to digest than cow's milk. Many who are lactose intolerant or have dairy allergies, are often able to digest goat's milk. Science Daily published an article which referenced research found in The British Journal of Nutrition sharing results done by RMIT, which found goat’s milk to have anti-infection properties that may help protect people against gastrointestinal infections and promote a healthy gut. Here at Riverwatch Farm, we adhere to strict and defined sanitation practices for safely handling raw milk as recommended by the state of Virginia. Milk samples are collected monthly and tested. We also participate in DHIR monthly milk testing.
In Virginia, the sale of raw milk is prohibited by law, but it is permissible to consume milk from an animal you either own or lease.
How does the arrangement function?
Upon enrollment, you enter into an agreement where you lease a portion of our goat herd, granting you access to a share of their milk production. To initiate your share, there is a one time buy-in fee of $25.00. This is a non-refundable one time fee and will include a 64 oz. mason jar that will hold your milk each week. Herdshare members pay a monthly boarding fee which covers the cost and labor of caring for the herd each month. Our 2024 herdshare boarding fee will be $50.00 a month. Each week, on your specified day, you will return your clean, empty jar here on the farm and we will provide you with one 64 oz. mason jar filled with fresh milk. This equates to about 1/2 gallon of raw goat milk weekly per share.
We are currently offering cheese shares to all of our Herdshare members. Available flavors will vary so check our inventory for options available. Our Chèvre is made from raw goat's milk from our Nigerian Dwarf goats right here on our farm. Our raw milk chèvre has a very mild flavor and smooth texture.
Our 2024 share opportunities will open up again in January 2024. Email us if you would like to be added to our wait list at riverwatchfarm@gmail.com and title it "Herdshare"
